Michigan: What the proposed gas tax hike means for trucking

If Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s proposed 45-cent gas tax increase is approved, it would make Michigan’s gas tax the highest in the country.

It would generate an additional $2 billion in revenue to help fix the state’s crumbling roads, a spokesperson for Whitmer said. According to GasBuddy.com, the average driver would pay an extra $270 per year per vehicle.

Reaction to the plan is mixed.

“No way,” one Grand Rapids driver said. “Less food on the table. It’s going to hit a lot of people hard; can’t afford it.”
