Texas Senate supports ending driver fee program (HB2048)

A unanimous Texas Senate on Wednesday approved repealing the Driver Responsibility Program, a major step toward ending a system of driving violation fees that have drawn sharp opposition for placing many low-income Texans in a cycle of debt.

House Bill 2048 would create new fees and fines to replace money for trauma care that the program has provided since it was begun in 2003, helping to expand the number of trauma hospitals across the state, particularly in rural areas.
