A draft of the Interstate 81 improvement plan has been approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board after its yearlong study, according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The study identified improvement priorities along 325 miles of I-81 and potential revenue sources for the work. The study team did analyze tolling and other financing methods to support the estimated $4 billion project. The team will submit its findings to the General Assembly before the first day of the 2019 session, said the release.
Commuters won’t be a funding source for improvements via vehicle tolls, because of legislation passed by the Virginia House of Delegates.
