South Carolina and other states continue to make millions selling your driver’s license information

In response to a Freedom of Information request, the department of motor vehicles showed last fiscal year alone, more than $15.6 million was spent by outside agencies seeking this information provided through the 1994 Driver’s Privacy Protection Act among others. Since it is federal law, the attempt to use the information for revenue is not isolated to states like South Carolina. In addition, like other states, drivers, at least those we heard from Friday, are oblivious to where their information goes.
