Smithsburg, MD speed limits may go all 25 mph

The speed limit in Smithsburg could become a uniform proposition for drivers later this year.

Under a recommendation from Mayor Jack Kesselring, town council Tuesday decided to begin working on a plan to make the speed limit 25 miles per hour on all streets in town.

“I’d like there to be a consistent speed throughout the town, to include the school system,” Kesselring said.

“There wouldn’t be any question about what the speed limit is. It’s all 25 mph.”

Kesselring said most of the town already has a 25 mph standard. There are, however, four streets set at 30. Main Street in the area of the schools, which is covered by a speed camera, is 20 mph.
