Michelin asks feds for help in reinventing the wheel

Greenville-based tire maker Michelin North America is asking federal officials to exempt from current safety standards a new type of airless tire for passenger cars that won’t go flat. Such an exemption doesn’t mean the products aren’t safe. It simply lets the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration develop regulations for the new tire apart from the current standards set for traditional pneumatic tires.
