San Luis Obispo County, CA: Thousands of petitions submitted in opposition to Hwy 46 funding cut

Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham submitted nearly 1,200 petitions to the California Transportation Commission in opposition to a plan that would delete funding for the Highway 46 project.

Highway 46 East near the Cholame Y is a roadway that’s worrisome for a lot of Northern San Luis Obispo County drivers.

In October, efforts to make that area of Highway 46 safer hit a roadblock when a proposed plan by Caltrans was put on hold.

Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham says the state is looking at taking money from making the area east of the “Y” into four lanes and instead using it for a railway project. In response, Cunningham sent a letter asking the CTC to reject this proposal.

“As the more than 1,000 people who signed the petition can attest, finishing the Highway 46 widening is critical,” wrote Cunningham in a letter accompanying the petitions. “The completion of this decades-long project has been and should remain a state priority.”
