More people traveling and the closure of the St. Georges Bridge sent a record number of cars through Delaware’s toll plazas during this year’s five-day Thanksgiving travel season.
More than 1.2 million vehicles passed through the I-95 Newark Plaza, the Del. 1 Biddles Corner Plaza and the Del. 1 Dover Plaza from Wednesday through Sunday, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation.
That meant more than $3.2 million in tolls was collected, DelDOT said.
There were 8,373 more vehicles at the tolls this year than in 2017, DelDOT said. In the last four years, an average of 1.2 million drivers have gone through state toll plazas.
The Del. 1 Biddles toll plaza saw the biggest year-over-year increase with 336,039 vehicles compared to 315,269 during the 2017 Thanksgiving holiday.
