Pittsburgh’s Healthy Ride bike-sharing program expanding after a rough stretch

The increase in the use of the bike-share program here is consistent with what is happening nationally, said Samantha Herr, executive director of the 80-member North American Bikeshare Association. That group’s figures show a 25 percent increase in bikes rented through sharing programs in 2016 and 19 percent in 2017.

“It’s one of the most cost-effective and easiest ways to get around,” she said.

Ms. Herr also praised Healthy Ride for its innovative program that allows Port Authority riders with prepaid ConnectCards to take 15-minute bike rides for free. That program, which can help riders make the first-mile or last-mile connection with public transit, began as a pilot last year but Port Authority recently agreed to extend it for another year.
