Chicago Suburb Oak Brook plans purchase of camera system that could scan license plates

Oak Brook Village Board members expressed unanimous support Tuesday to spend $166,346 on a high quality license plate recognition system to help prevent vehicle thefts and burglaries, and to catch thieves and burglars.

Police Chief James Kruger said the system would place two stationary cameras in the village that could read license plates of vehicles.

“We wouldn’t make it known where we place the cameras because we don’t want the criminal element to know and drive around them,” Kruger said.

License plate readers are not new to the area.
