New Jersey: Paterson cop reveals wider practice of illegal car stops than first disclosed

Former city Police Officer Jonathan Bustios revealed in federal court in Newark on Tuesday that the illegal traffic stops he was conducting in conspiracy with other Paterson cops were far more extensive than what authorities previously disclosed.

During his guilty plea, Bustios admitted that he and other police officers targeted motorists they believed were carrying significant amounts of money and then took cash from those people illegally.

Bustios said in court that the illegal stops had begun in 2016 and continued into 2018. At the time of Bustios’ arrest in April, federal authorities had revealed only crimes that took place in 2018.
