New bill SB1786 could reinstate 50,000 Illinois driver’s licenses

If you lost your driver’s license over unpaid parking tickets, you could soon be getting it back.

Right now, if you have over 10 parking tickets in Springfield, your license can be suspended, but a bill awaiting the governor’s signature could end that.

Lawmakers are pushing to change this, saying having unpaid tickets doesn’t determine a person’s ability to drive.

“Obviously you can’t get to work if your driver’s license is suspended. If you can’t get to work, you can’t pay your unpaid ticket,” said Henry Haupt, spokesperson for the Secretary of State Jesse White.
