Remember last year, when legislators passed the Mississippi Infrastructure Modernization Act during Special Session? One of the small clauses within the bill was a new tax on hybrid and electric cars. The reasoning, that they don’t pay as much in gas taxes as other vehicles, so they should pay a little extra into county taxes.
The newly imposed tax was $75 yearly for hybrid car owners and $150 yearly for electric car owners.
Some constituents questioned why Legislature seemed to be penalizing individuals for making a fiscally responsible choice in purchasing a vehicle that gets better gas millage due to the the utilization of alternative fuel.
Well, in SB 2002, authored by Senators Hudson and Hill, that statute is now being repealed.
