And while touting her efforts to develop relationships with leaders of the Republican-controlled Legislature, Whitmer also blasted lawmakers for their $1.3-billion spending spree on the last day of the lame-duck session in December.

Speaking at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham as part of the Detroit Free Press Breakfast Club Series, Whitmer would not be pinned down, in response to questions, about whether she plans to propose higher taxes to pay for road fixes.
