Mesquite, TX man questions city’s red light camera program at city council meeting

A Mesquite man went before the City Council during the citizen’s forum portion of the Jan. 22 meeting to share his findings and thoughts on receiving a red light ticket and questioned the legality of it.

According to Section 707.003 of the Texas Transportation Code, before installing a photographic traffic signal enforcement system at an intersection “the local authority shall conduct a traffic engineering study of the approach to determine whether, in addition to or as an alternative to the system, a design change to the approach or a change in the signalization of the intersection is likely to reduce the number of red light violations at the intersection.”

Pablo Torres said he did not believe the city conducted a traffic study and raised the question as to who gave the city the authority to authorize a third party to issue citations.
