Ada County Highway District Commissioner Kent Goldthorpe has long championed the need to crack down on out-of-county vehicle registrations, but an Idaho Transportation Department official said the number of cars illegally registered outside the county is likely fewer than initially thought.
Goldthorpe had previously said Ada County was missing out on millions of dollars in registration revenue. He partnered with ITD to find out exactly how many Ada County motorists weren’t paying their fair share by registering their vehicles in other counties.
Of the roughly 1.6 million registered vehicles in Idaho, around 600,000 are registered in Ada County, said Alberto Gonzalez, ITD Department of Motor Vehicles administrator.
Idaho law requires that motorists register in the county where they primarily reside.
