Illinois Opinion: Red-light reporting a point of pride

Readers of the Landmark should be proud of the work initiated by Bob Uphues and Brett McNeil that has led to the investigation and recent guilty plea of at least one elected official in the recently recognized red-light camera scam.

Investigative reporting by Uphues and McNeil showed that the cameras, rather than reducing injuries and collisions at hazardous intersections, have functioned mainly as revenue generators by suburbs — and that their adoption has been marred by corruption and bribery of elected officials by executives at Redflex and SafeSpeed LLC or their lobbyists.

The Landmark’s reporting was later amplified by the Chicago Tribune, and has led not only to convictions, but to moves by certain villages to remove or halt the adoption of these cameras.
