Texans, thank state Sen. Kirk Watson, the Democrat who represents Austin and used to be its mayor. He is proposing doubling the state’s gasoline tax.
That may sound like a left-handed compliment, because many folks hate paying more taxes.
But Watson, one of the most thoughtful and far-sighted legislators, at least has the guts to say what needs to be said.
Watson proposes that tax increase because he, and many others, think Interstate 35 through Austin needs expansion.
Given the thin funding for Texas state highways these days, plus the opposition to toll roads that Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick embraced in late 2017, Watson is looking for more money to build the additional lanes.
