Virginia Beach: Have you seen those black ribbons on school buses? Here’s what they mean

Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ bus drivers are joining their counterparts across the state and throughout the country by inscribing this simple message on black ribbons:”Red Flashing, No Passing.”

The ribbons will be placed on their bus grills — the goal is to bring attention to incidents of children being hurt by motorists illegally passing school buses that are loading and unloading children.

Each ribbon costs $3 and according to school bus driver Tammy DeLoach, who spearheaded the effort together with other drivers after seeing campaigns in other cities, they have distributed 200-300 ribbons.

They are donating the funds toward their school bus scholarship fund and any extra money donated will be given to the bus drivers association’s scholarship fund, which every year awards scholarships to graduating seniors.
