Florida transportation head says not building controversial toll roads remains possibility

The next planning phase for three controversial toll road projects could begin next year, Florida Transportation Secretary Kevin Thibault told a group of reporters during a brief news conference Tuesday.

That includes keeping alive a “no build” option if state transportation planners find the project is not needed or is unaffordable, he said.

Planning “would start in January of next year,” Thibault said after addressing the final meeting of the Suncoast Corridor Task Force, one of three groups appointed to review the northwest portion of a 330-mile proposed statewide toll road system.
