Coronavirus taking toll on Pennsylvania Turnpike and other roads nationwide

In Pennsylvania, turnpike traffic dipped by 50%, or 20 million fewer vehicles since mid-March, and toll revenues have fallen by $150 million.

“If this were any other year, we would be talking about Memorial Day, one of the busiest travel days of the year,” Patrick D. Jones, president of International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association, an association of owners of toll facilities, said during a national press briefing Thursday on the status of toll highways.

“Instead, we are talking about the effects of the COVID-19 on our nation’s economy and our daily lives,” he said.
