As originally proposed Cohasset planned to look into adopting a uniform speed limit. With some early opposition to that idea, the Police Department explored a process by which citizens could petition the traffic safety officer to lower speed limits on a street-by-street basis.
At a Board of Selectmen meeting last January, Quigley stated his desire to make sure that speed changes were well-supported, saying, “we want it to be more than one person asking for the change.”
In the time that has passed, however, Town Manager Chris Senior says that idea has proven infeasible.
Senior noted the town has had residents come forward from a number of different areas supporting reduced speed limits. While residents’ support does show a positive response to the street by street idea, Senior believes it also shows there is enough reason to go to a uniform limit.
