Chicago Editorial: Red-light cameras–How greed threatens a useful safety tool

When red-light cameras began appearing in Chicago in 2003, the mission seemed straightforward. Red-light scofflaws endanger themselves and everyone around them. Cameras would nab offenders and hit them with fines that would encourage safer driving.

Sixteen years later, the verdict on red-light cameras can be described as a good idea that greed twisted into a cash register for some vendors and municipal officials in the Chicago area.
