Chicago Area: History of widening Route 83, and its opposition, goes back to the 1980s

Drivers of Route 83 might have been pleased to find roadwork that resulted in lane closures between Ogden Avenue and 55th Street finished by the beginning of November, instead of the end of that month, as had been projected by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

But while access to all lanes has considerably reduced travel delays, that stretch of road — about 2.5 miles — often finds itself with slowdowns during rush hours, as it narrows on both sides from three lanes in each direction to two.
