Charlotte, NC area’s first toll road opens this morning, ushering in more projects

The limited-access toll road stretches from Matthews for 18 miles, almost to Marshville. It has an “all-electronic” toll system that reads transponders on vehicles that have them and the license plates for all automobiles that pass through. The price of a one-way trip on the road is $2.54 for vehicles with transponders. It’s $3.92 each way if the state has to bill you for the drive.

The Monroe Expressway took three years to build, but preparation — and the idea for a roadway to bypass dozens of traffic lights along U.S. Highway 74 through Monroe — dates back more than a decade. Economic development officials have said eastern Union County would benefit from a quicker link to Charlotte.
