Attorney says Mercer County, NJ prosecutors violating due process rights in forfeiture cases

Authorities hit the jackpot last year when they pulled over Kashon Beckett riding dirty in a blue Kia with out-of-state tags.

An officer wrote in a probable cause affidavit that he pulled over Beckett near Southard Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard because he was using a cell phone.

During the car stop, officers smelled “the strong odor of burnt marijuana emanating” from Beckett’s vehicle — a line that defense attorneys in the region have come to recognize as seemingly boilerplate language in police reports.
