Alameda, CA trying to improve traffic safety: Residents can comment on online interactive map

Vehicles hitting five children as they walked or cycled to school during a three-month span last year is spurring city officials to look at spots where traffic safety can be improved.

While none of the children were seriously injured, the accidents sent a clear message that some Alameda streets can be risky for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The city also is asking residents to help identify dangerous locations — and have gotten plenty of feedback.

More than 1,400 people have contributed to an online survey, selecting areas on a map and commenting.
