UK Motoring Group Slams Government-Funded Report As Anti-Car
A government-funded UK agency on Thursday called for more speed cameras, lower speed limits and “car free days” to improve the environment. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) insisted in a new report that these measures would improve air quality in England. The Alliance of British Drivers dismissed the claims as the same old rhetoric from the anti-car lobby.

2010 Study: License Points Have No Behavioral Impact
The insurance industry argues that the system of adding points to the driver’s license of anyone convicted of speeding will lead to safer roads. Lawmakers around the country have universally followed the industry’s lead, assuming that people who receive tickets will see their annual insurance premiums skyrocket and this will change behavior. While those increases have improved the balance sheets of auto insurers, a 2010 study published in the European Transport Research Review questioned the assumption that the point system enhances road safety.

California Supreme Court Finalizes Parking Ticket Ruling
Los Angeles can no longer pawn off review of parking tickets to a private vendor after the California Supreme Court finalized a lower court’s ruling last week. The justices turned away the appeal of city officials and their for-profit parking ticket vendor, Xerox, which means that they will now have to pay motorist Cody Weiss $721,995 to cover the costs he incurred in his challenge of a parking ticket he received for allegedly exceeding the two-hour limit on La Jolla Avenue in March 2012.

OPINION: Draining the transportation swamp
President-elect Donald J. Trump says boosting America’s infrastructure will be among his top priorities when he moves into the Oval Office on January 20. His campaign promise to fix bridges and build new roads by leveraging new revenue sources such as “public-private partnerships, and other prudent funding opportunities” has raised concern. “Public-private partnership” is a euphemism for the unpopular idea of a toll road.

France, Italy: Speed Cameras Torched, Demolished
In Solagna, Italy, a newly installed speed camera failed to prevent an accident on Friday, Il Giornale di Vicenza reported. A small sedan slammed into the device, destroying its ability to issue tickets.
