Utah Supreme Court Defends Multi-Space Parking Meters
Cities around the country have replaced traditional coin-fed parking meters with “pay and display” style electronic parking meter kiosks. The new devices increase the amount of revenue cities collect, but an attempt by a group of Utah motorists to stop their use in Salt Lake City failed last week before the state’s highest court.

Buffalo, New York Sued Over Racial Roadblocks
Police in Buffalo, New York have been setting up roadblocks in predominately black neighborhoods, raising the ire of local civil rights groups. On Monday, the Western New York Law Center (WNYLC) and the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ) on Monday sued the city over its refusal to hand over public documents related to the suspicionless search of motorists.

DC Board Slams Police Search Tactics
Complaints are on the rise in DC over the way Metropolitan Police Department officers have been conducting searches, according to a report released last week from the DC Police Complaints Board. The board’s investigators examined the way “voluntary” searches of cars, persons and homes were handled in light of complaints of harassment, coercion and racial motivation. Three-quarters of the complaints came from black residents, mostly from the sixth and seventh police districts in southeast.

France, Latvia, Saudi Arabia, UK: Speed Cameras Burn
On Thursday, vigilantes set fire to the speed camera on Cannock Road in South Staffordshire, England, the Express and Star newspaper reported. Vigilantes in Ogre, Latvia on Saturday set fire to the speed camera on the A6. According to Delfi, the device was installed two weeks ago. In Hafar Al-Batin, Saudi Arabia, vigilantes on Saturday used red spraypaint to prevent a speed camera from issuing tickets, Al Yaum reported.
