Governors Group Seeks Autonomous Vehicle Safety Education
Excited chatter about automated and autonomous vehicles must lead to more consumer education and laws that govern driverless vehicles, the author of a new study for the Governor’s Highway Safety Association said. “The hype is pretty much over,” James Hedlund, who wrote the 41-page report, told Trucks.com. “We know things are happening. It’s up to the states to say, ‘Let’s get ready for it.”’ The report urges state highway safety offices to change traffic laws to accommodate automated cars and trucks and bring the public, law enforcement and departments of motor vehicles up to speed on the challenges of self-driving vehicles and how to identify and register them. States literally are all over the map on the subject of autonomous vehicles.  Ten have authorized full deployment without a human operator, the most aggressive approach. Thirteen others are studying AVs. Fourteen others are somewhere in between
