Assembly Bill 5676 is under consideration in the Assembly Transportation Committee. The bill would allow municipalities to set speed limits on local roads within their jurisdictions. The bill would prohibit speed limits lower than 25 mph but would also not require that limits be set based on any established traffic engineering standards.

The NMA is opposed to this bill since municipalities, always looking for revenue, will likely arbitrarily lower limits to create speed traps and other abusive enforcement scenarios. Learn more about how speed limits should be set here.
