Bill No.:
SB 2283
Bill Location:
MassachusettsSenate
Bill Title:

Promoting Safety by Permitting Municipalities to Reduce Speed Limits

Full Bill Text ›
NMA Recommendation:
Oppose

Senate Bill 2283 would allow local authorities to decrease speed limits on roads they control by 5 mph without conducting any type of speed study. The bill language specifically gives authorities discretion to lower limits even if the previous speed limit had been “determined as reasonable and proper by the department.” The bill is currently under consideration in the Joint Transportation Committee.

The NMA opposes this bill since arbitrarily lowering speed limits has nothing to do with promoting safety and only encourages abusive enforcement practices such as speed traps. Learn more about how speed limits should be set here.
