Dear NMA Pennsylvania Members,
If you have driven the Pennsylvania Turnpike within the last several years and are outraged at paying tolls that continue to be charged at a rate more than double the cost of operating the turnpike, then help us spark a statewide conversation about this abuse of truckers and motorists by complaining directly to your state legislators and Governor Tom Wolf.
The NMA along with the preeminent national association of independent truck drivers, OOIDA, fired the first salvo by filing a class action complaint in U.S. District Court against the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) and other parties, including Governor Wolf. Our Taking Tolling to Task e-newsletter of March 26th outlines the charges and, for good measure, documents the magnitude of overcharging (see Table 4) per public records from PTC and PennDOT.
In 2016 and 2017 alone, PTC charged turnpike users $1.16 billion (that’s billion with a “b”) more than what it cost to operate the system. There is no indication overcharging of that magnitude will abate any time soon. Not unless Harrisburg is called to task in federal court by us and in the court of public opinion by you.
In addition to contacting state officials, write to your local newspaper, call in to radio stations and encourage others to complain about wildly excessive tolling on the turnpike that is being used to fund non-turnpike operations. This is a “we’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore” moment for the protection of our rights and our pocketbooks.
Share your opinions about the tolling with us. We will continue to update the public on the status of the federal case in the NMA e-newsletter and on our blog and would very much like to include road user feedback. Send your comments to NMA@motorists.org and help us create a statewide discussion in Pennsylvania and ultimately a national referendum against unwarranted tolling.
