Hawaii SB 244 – Certain prohibitions for large vehicles of more than 10,000 pounds
Certain prohibitions for large vehicles of more than 10,000 poundsFull Bill Text
SB 244 was introduced to the Hawaii Senate on January 18, 2019 and was then referred to the Transportation Committee. It is not yet scheduled for a hearing or vote by the committee.
The bill would prohibit large trucks from traveling in the left-most lane of a highway with three or more lanes of moving traffic. While that clause is acceptable, SB 244 would also limit the speed of large trucks to 55 mph, effectively creating a split speed limit between cars and other light vehicles and large trucks. Such a speed differential causes safety concerns.
The NMA has joined with Owner-Operator Independent Driver Association (OOIDA) in the past to lobby against split speed limits for large trucks. Here is more information on the dangers of creating a speed differential on the highways.
