UPDATE January 4, 2021: Bill died in committee

SB 1669 was introduced on February 5, 2020 and assigned to the Senate Transportation & Public Safety Committee, as well as the Senate Rules Committee. On February 19th, the TPS Committee voted a “do pass,” 5 to 3. On February 27th, the Senate passed the bill upon third reading by a 17 to 13 vote. SB 1669 now moves on to the Arizona House for consideration.

The bill would amend Section 28-701.02 of the Arizona Revised Statutes, reclassifying “excessive speed” and related penalties as being applicable for drivers traveling more than 20 mph over the posted limit. The current definition of excessive speed is a travel speed over 85 mph. The proposed change recognizes that Arizona has 75 mph speed limits and that drivers traveling at 10 mph or more over the posting in those areas, while a violation, is not necessarily subject to excessive speed penalties between 85 and 95 mph.
