Speed warning given to former child star prompts probe

Associated Press

The City Council has asked its attorney to investigate the propriety of giving a verbal warning, instead of a speeding ticket, to a former child star of an '80s television series who was driving 45 miles over the speed limit.

Emmanuel Lewis, former star of the "Webster" series," got only a warning after giving his autograph and posing for a photo with the police officer who had stopped him and with the town's police chief, officials said.

Warwick City Attorney Tommy Coleman said Thursday that he will be conducting interviews and gathering facts about the incident to present to the City Council next week.

Officer Ron Kirk said he stopped a vehicle Tuesday afternoon that had been traveling 70 mph in a 45 mph zone on state route 300. Kirk said he immediately recognized Lewis, who was towing a trailer loaded with an SUV he had purchased in Albany.

"Well, I grew up watching him and he was very nice and professional, so I just gave him a courtesy warning," Kirk told Albany television station WALB.

The officer also asked for Lewis' autograph and the child star agreed to pose for a picture with Kirk and Police Chief Randy Howard Jr.

Warwick, a lakeside town about 30 miles northeast of Albany, gets most of its police revenues from speeding fines, Kirk said.

Although police officers have a right to use discretion when they stop speeders, Coleman said he will be looking into Kirk's conduct and at how he made the decision to issue only a verbal warning.

"Seventy miles-per-hour in a 45-mph zone is far too fast," Coleman said.
