- Air Bags
Air bags should be installed at the option of the vehicle owner or purchaser. All air bags should be equipped with deactivation switches. Air bags should not be mandated by government regulation. Any person with an air bag equipped vehicle should have the option of having the air bag(s) removed or deactivated.
Early versions of the airbag were overpowered and resulted in injuries and deaths from accidents that would have otherwise been minimal. While the design faults have been largely corrected, the basic principle that airbags should be optional and under the control of vehicle occupants is still valid.
Air bags add significant cost to new vehicles, their value is limited, they can still cause injury, they increase repair costs, and they constitute a danger to small children who are inadvertently positioned in an air bag zone.
