2011 Saab 9-5 Sedan: Same Only Better

2011 Mazda

By The Car Family – April 2011

We have owned Saabs for a decade and found their sturdy construction, turbocharged engines, seats, and safety features the equal to any in the world. The problem has been a small dealer network, poor advertising, and a lack of an upscale model. As such, we pestered Saab until we could get the test the new 9-5 to see if this was the answer. It is, only better than we imagined.

The first impression one gets of the new Saab is that it is a grown-up car. It no longer has that let's play attitude of the previous generation, which looked nimble and athletic. The new model looks, well, serious. The rear treatment is unique and upscale, as you might expect on a $40,000 plus sedan.. It has a futuristic look. No one is ever going to say that Saab isn't a risk taking company now.

Driving the 9-5 is a revelation. It is among the world's best handling large sedans in the world. The brakes have a good pedal feel, and the four cylinder engine gave us 26 mph in mixed driving with instant acceleration. We have no idea why anyone needs the V6, because the standard engine is all you are going to need for legal transportation needs. You can order the 9-5 with all wheel drive and a 300 horsepower V6 if you live where inclement weather abounds.

Frankly, we were amazed at how easy it was to maneuver, fun to drive, frugal to operate, and the best stereo and satellite radio readout we have ever seen. The eight-inch screen is easy to read, shows the names the song and artist, and responds quickly to inputs. The Saab's trunk lid gently opens reveling a huge cargo space and the rear seats fold down adding even more capacity. The gas tank holds 19 gallons and making for a cruising range of 500 miles plus and with comfortable seats, a great sound system, and adaptive cruise control this is one delightful travel companion.

Mom's view: The Saab is still quirky. The dash layout is strange requires some practice to master all the displays. The $43,000 price is a bit troubling in this market. Saab is going up against Infiniti, Cadillac, Audi, and others. The problem that the Spyker, the new owners, must solve is whether buyers are going to buy this all new Saab because it is a Saab, or because it is better than the competition. Personally, I love the Saab and find it the best big car to park, maneuver, and load. The trunk opens wide and holds plenty. Best of all, the six-speed trans mission keeps the turbocharger engine on task making on-ramp merging easy. It is a pleasure to drive, but there are visibility problems to the side even with the larger mirrors Saab uses. The colors on the instruments appear fresh, clean, and modern. I highly recommend watching the dual speedometer readouts carefully as this Saab loves to romp. Overall, the 9-5 reminded me of the loner in high school who no one paid any attention too until they watched him play. Someone needs to play with this Saab.

Dad's view: The ride is a bit harsh over unkempt roads, but it is worth it when the first corner you take melts away. The road to Mt. Wilson felt like a freeway and the Ortega Highway didn't even warm the tires. A true canyon cutter. As most Saabs, this one is filled with safety features. There is a lane-departure warning buzzer,Electronic Stability, Traction Control, front and side curtain airbags, and more. I truly enjoyed driving this Saab. However, I like to drive and and appreciated the Saabs frisky nature despite its size. This Saab reminded me of those at school who were the trend setters that few understood until years afterwards. Maybe its time to join them.

Young working woman's view: There are a plethora of standard features include dual zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, leather covered seats, power and heated front seats, power/heated outside mirrors, steering wheel audio controls, trip computer, keyless entry/pushbutton start, rain-sensing wipers, and even a cooled glove box among other niceties. There is plenty here to impress your friends and a four-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty with no-charge scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles to calm your worries. But best of all it is a Saab and a great revelation to your friends who are frequently stuck in the Bimmer mode. The 9-5 reminds me of myself when I was in school, dependable, but edgy.

Young working man's view: What a great readout for your satellite radio and stereo selections. The screen reacts quickly and you can get the name of the song, artist, and the the ability to store 10 GB of music. A USB and Auxiliary port, and 12 volt power outlet are handy . Other options include a rear seat entertainment unit that includes twin air vents with independent temperature and fan speed controls. For Saab, flying first class extends to those in the coach section. This is an ideal car to attract the eyes of those who appreciate flair and substance. For those stuck in the past you can buy a Bentley key-chain. This Saab reminded me of the teacher that wasn't well liked until we finally understood his message years later. It is years later.

Family conference: We dare you.

When you see a police car on the side of the road, it should make you feel more safe.
So why doesn't it?

Across the United States, even the most careful, safe drivers on the road would probably admit to being nervous when they spot a police officer enforcing traffic laws. Instead of inspiring feelings of safety, our traffic laws are used to create fear. Can this ever change?
