Request An On-Off Switch

The following is how to get an "on-off" switch for your airbag.

First, you should obtain and read a copy of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) brochure, Air Bags & On-Off Switches: Information for an Informed Decision.

After reading that, download the form, Request for Air Bag On-Off Switch.

This is a PDF file so you will need Acrobat Reader to view the form which you can download here for free.

The next step is to fill out the form. And this is where the secret to getting permission for the switch comes in.

You need to check the box that SOME driver (maybe once every 20 years or so) cannot sit 10 inches back. For the passenger side, check the box that on SOME occasions (maybe once every 20 years or so) you will carry enough kids that you run out of rear belts and one has to sit in front. The rules do NOT require that these conditions apply to the car owner, or apply often.

Once the form is completed, you can send it to:

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Attention: Air Bag Switch Requests
400 Seventh Street, SW
Washington, DC 20590-1000

Or you can fax it to:
202/493-2833
